Tree and vegetation approvals in Brisbane

Brisbane is the most heavily documented of the seven, and the one with the most terminology attached to it. Adam works out whether your vegetation is protected, what Brisbane requires, and prepares the arboricultural material it asks for.

Send the property address

A Brisbane address is often enough to check whether the vegetation is protected before anything is commissioned.

What it protects

How Brisbane protects vegetation

Brisbane City Council protects vegetation through the Natural Assets Local Law, generally shortened to NALL. Works affecting protected vegetation are approved under a permit issued against it.

The council uses a set of classifications for vegetation it has an interest in — Significant Landscape Trees, Significant Urban Vegetation, Significant Native Vegetation, and Waterway and Wetland Vegetation among them. A tree may fall under one of those, under a Vegetation Protection Order, or be a council street tree, and each carries a different pathway.

The practical effect is that "is my tree protected in Brisbane" has several possible yes answers, and which one applies changes what you apply for. That is a mapping and records check against the address before anything else happens.

  • Natural Assets Local Law (NALL)The instrument itself. A NALL permit is what works on protected vegetation are approved under.
  • Protected Vegetation PermitShort-term and long-term forms exist, and which applies depends on the works proposed.
  • Protected Vegetation EnquiryThe check on whether vegetation at an address is protected, and under what.
  • Application to Carry Out Works on Protected VegetationThe application itself, where works are proposed.
  • Vegetation Protection Order (VPO)An order protecting specific vegetation.
  • Significant Landscape Tree (SLT)A classification applied to individual trees of landscape significance.
  • Significant Urban Vegetation (SUV)Vegetation classified for its urban significance.
  • Significant Native Vegetation (SNV)Vegetation classified for its native significance.
  • Waterway and Wetland Vegetation (WWV)Vegetation associated with waterways and wetlands.
  • Minor Street Tree PruningThe pathway where works concern a council street tree rather than vegetation on private land.
  • Protected Vegetation Management Plan (PVMP)Where a management plan is required for protected vegetation.
  • Declaration of ComplianceFor approved works to protected vegetation, certifying the completed work.

How it runs

Check first, apply second

A good share of Brisbane enquiries end at step one, either because the vegetation is not protected or because what is proposed does not trigger an application.

  1. 01

    Desktop check against the address

Whether the vegetation is protected, under which instrument, and whether what you are proposing needs approval at all. For Brisbane that is a mapping and records check, and it does not always require Adam to attend the property.

  2. 02

Work out what the council will want

Brisbane City Council names the arboricultural information it requires, and it is not the same as the council next door. Reading that requirement determines which report type applies before any assessment starts.

  3. 03

    Assessment and the report

The tree inspected on site, measurements recorded rather than estimated, and the document prepared to the council's requirement using the terminology that council actually uses.

  4. 04

Lodgement, and closing the condition out

Where the application type allows it, Adam can submit on your behalf and handle council queries. Where an approval requires the completed works to be inspected and certified, that final report is part of the same engagement.

Common questions

About Brisbane approvals

Send Adam the property address
  • A permit issued under Brisbane City Council's Natural Assets Local Law, which is the instrument the council protects vegetation under. Works affecting protected vegetation are approved under it. Which form of permit applies depends on what is proposed.

  • It is a classification Brisbane City Council applies to individual trees, and it means the council has a recorded interest in that tree. Works affecting it will need to go through the council rather than being your decision alone. What is achievable depends on the tree and what is proposed, and it is assessed rather than assumed.

  • Street trees on the verge are generally council vegetation rather than yours, even where they sit directly outside your property. Brisbane has a separate pathway for works on street trees, and it is not the same as applying for works on protected vegetation on private land.

  • A desktop check against the address and council mapping, which frequently does not require a site visit. It is the first thing to establish, because if the vegetation is not protected the rest of the question falls away.

  • Where the application type allows it, yes — preparing the supporting arboricultural material and submitting on your behalf, then handling any council queries or a request for further information.

  • No arborist can promise that, and this one will not. The council determines the application against its own instrument. What the report does is ensure the decision is made on accurate, qualified information rather than an assertion.
